Living Wage

The Living Wage means thriving, not just surviving.
Yesterday, 3rd April 2023 Environment Canterbury became New Zealand’s first accredited Living Wage Regional Council.
This was work done by the PSA, our CE and the previous council, especially Chair Jenny Hughey and Cr Phil Clearwater. I was very pleased to go along to the accreditation event alongside Cr’s Scott, Robinson, Davies & Edge on behalf of Council.
The rākau whakaara has been laid down to other Council’s.

UPDATE: The 2023/24 Living Wage rate, starting 1 September 2023, is $26.00.
It is currently $23.65, and applies from 1 September 2022-31 August 2023.
The Living Wage is an hourly rate. Set apart from the minimum wage, it’s worker and whānau focused.
Paying the Living Wage rate is voluntary. Employers who pay the Living Wage want to make sure their workers get enough money to live with dignity. The Living Wage considers basic expenses, and gives breathing room for rest, activities, or saving for a rainy day. It’s good for collective wellbeing, and our economy.
